Can I get some help with rooting?

Noob

I am a noob to rooting. I have a sprint s4 SGH-L720 and I am still running android 4.4.2 with 3.4.0 kernel. I know there is newer versions out there. I just need help updating and have questions about if I need to unroot aor if I can just update with my current root. I didn't do the root a friend did it for me and they are unavailable. Please help. Thank you

You can update with root but you will most probably lose root access and will have to root again.
