Can I make it stop looking for updates?

Sorry if this has been answered before. If I am NOT rooted, is there a way to get my phone to quit looking for updates for things I don't want (or want to update automatically). There are some applications I don't/wont use that are always telling me there is an update available. I don't see an option to disable it. The specific one I am talking about at the moment is 'Flipboard'.

Disable the Flipboard app in settings-application manager and hide the icon. If you updated it you will need to "uninstall updates" to see the disable button.

I didn't see the disable because I had let it update before. I had to delete the update and then it showed the option to disable.
