Can I replace the screen on my phone myself?

Cracked my screen -- help

So my phone fell out of my pocket this afternoon when I was getting out of my car and even though I had a Spigen case on it, it still managed to ding up the bezel and develop a crack on the screen across the screen (horizontally). I called Motorola and Google to inquire about replacement services and neither will do repairs (even for a fee).

Is replacing the screen something you can do yourself? If so, where is the best place to buy an authentic replacement? If I can't do it myself, where is the best place to send the phone?

Appreciate any help.

Re: Cracked my screen -- help

I would talk to someone else at Motorola. Plenty of people saying that they are fixing their cracked nexus 6 screens for 150. That sucks though. I used to buy my screens off eBay but not sure If they have them for this phone yet on there.

Re: Cracked my screen -- help

IF the outer glass is the only thing broken, that's all you need. And about 5 phones to practice on,

You have to heat the glass enough to melt the glue holding it to the screen, but not enough to damage the screen. It has to reach that temperature all over at the same time, or you'll spend an hour picking tiny bits of glass off the screen with a magnifying glass, tweezers and, finally, transparent tale. (Some of those "particles" will be flakes -glass flakes like flint - and about as thin as a thin human hair, so only the sticky side of the tape will remove them. If you don't, you'll always have that little bump or little tear in the screen itself.)

While it seems a lot cheaper to buy the screen and not pay for labor, check local independent cellphone repair shops. (There's a kiosk in the local mall that repairs screens while you wait.) The entire screen may be $150 to replace, but the price tor replace just the glass is a lot less, and it's being done by someone with a heat gun with a spreader who's done it before and can almost tell by the feel in the air when the glass is just hot enough to lift off. (And if they do break something, they pay to fix what they broke. Although if they run their shop the right way, it won't happen. I had each of my techs replace at least 6 screen glasses on old non-functioning screens without any damage caused by him before I'd let him touch a job on a customer's phone. [That was about 20 screens in all - at least 10 broken glass plates being taken off before the tech developed a sense of the sweet spot, sometimes a few more.])

So yes, it's that cheap and - if you know what you're doing that easy. (I really don't want to see you posting here next week asking how difficult it is to replace the whole screen because you damaged yours when you replaced the glass. You can post - I just don't want it to happen to you.)

And this is why purchasing this device scares me, as much as I want it. Hearing these unfortunate stories of cracked or broken screens, with no one willing or able to help out, as far as the companies and third-party stores go isn't exactly confidence inspiring. I understand that it's still early, but seriously. Google obviously botched the launch; there's hardly any devices to go around if someone wants to get one. I'm disappointed. Will it stop me from getting one? Probably not, but maybe that's because I see the potential for me to really enjoy the device for a while. Of course, that's if I don't encounter a screen problem myself, or any other. In that case, I'd just be a glutton for punishment.

I think a lot of people get a false sense of security with some of the slim option cases. Most of those are really only good to keep the phone's body from showing scratches and wear - they won't do much against a fall.

Regarding repair, if a Motorola rep said they do not offer paid repair service on the Nexus 6, you need to contact Motorola again and speak with another rep. Google wouldn't, since they're not the OEM. Given that the screen is fused to the digitizer, you can expect it to be fairly expensive ($150-175 range sounds about right).

I agree. Don't waste your money. I did the exact same thing. Bought the glass, but nobody will take the chance to fix it. I contacted Motorola, and for $175, I'm getting a new phone. I simply send my old one back when it arrives. Takes less than five days.

You mean you're sending your device in for repair, and they send you a replacement device while they repair it? If that's the case, they charge your card $500 and place a hold on it. Once you get your original device back, you send them back the new one, and the hold on your card is lifted, and your money is refunded. In that case, you'd have to keep on them for your refund.

No. They placed a hold of $500 on my card. My new device will arrive Tuesday of next week. Once it arrives, I send the old phone back. Once they receive the old phone, I'm charged $175. The $500 hold is for if I don't send the old phone back. This way, I'm not without a phone.

Makes the $120 I spent on Motocare sound like a sound decision...

Add the two replacements (if I break it twice to fully use the insurance) to that cost ($39x2) and it's still only $188...

Re: Cracked my screen -- help

Motorola is absolutely useless.

Someone please tell me it is easy and cheap as buying this:

New Front Outer Screen Glass Panel Lens for Motorola Google Nexus 6 w Tools | eBay

What do you mean Motorola is useless? I spider webbed my screen the other day. I just paid Moto for a repair (which will be a refirb replacement unit). The cost is $175, and I allowed a $500 hold on my credit card so I would get the new one sent to me prior to my sending back the old one.

Was easy as pie to do online. I just googled Motorola Nexus 6 Repair or something like that.

And I didn't even get my phone from Moto! I got from T-Mobile but don't do JUMP.

Benjamin, I did the same thing as you did. Got my replacement phone with all the return packaging from FedEx. Went perfectly. Fast service. Phone seems even better than the original.

To buy authentic replacement for your nexus you can go to hcqs.cc. They directly work with the oem factory.
