can i retain my UK number without a SIM contract?

Hi, 3 got fed up with me using my UK SIM in France and now apply £2 a day roaming charges so it looks like I need to end my contract with 3 and get a French SIM. I don't want to keep using my UK number in France but I'd quite like to hang on to the number somehow (as I've had it for decades) until i return to the UK in a couple of years. Is there a way of doing this?

So far as I know, a number cannot be ported - the term used - between different countries, but 3 will be able to advise.

The advice still stands, contact your provider. I can keep(reserve) my # in Canada. Cost is $10/month for up to 6 months.
Guess you'd have to decide how important that # is to you.

Better get a French SIM and a new number then. Wondering what's gonna happen to my Whatsapp groups - the ones I created and the ones I'm in?

I believe you can change the associated # in WhatsApp. Haven't used it since my company went to Google chat so not sure.
