I'm new to rooting and would appreciate help. My (original) Evo 4G is rooted, running stock and s-off. I'm not sure if I can safely download the latest ota update without destroying or damaging the root and superuser access I have now and don't know if it will switch s-off to s-on.

It shouldn't mess with s/off but I NEVER accept OTA's(especially if it updates your rom) as you could lose root, better to wait for a rooted version!

Sent from Looney Tunes Central!

Strange things can happen outside of your control.

If you are rooted, you cannot accept OTA's from HTC,it will brick a rooted phone!

When has this happened? I can't think of any reason an OTA would brick a phone, just because it was rooted. I was able to pull the OTA file after downloading it because I was rooted, and I could even apply it (which removed root, but because my NAND is unlocked, flashing superuser in recovery fixes that). I'm just curious to know when/if this has actually ever happened. I'd really be interested in how.

I've seen some things, good, bad, and funky... but I've never seen a complete, un-repairable brick from a rooted OTA update. Worst case is usually a re-flash, but I HAVE read about others with worse problems. My guess is these tend to be with different versions of radios that affect the hardware mostly outside of a ROMs control. I always tell people 'never do it' because if you are asking if you should accept an OTA while rooted, the chances of understanding what to do when things go wrong are often slim-to-none as well.
