Yep, tried that. Took me to the dialer, but I couldn't get to the call in progress. It was a bit strange.

What about dragging down the Notification bar? That should show the current call in progress.

I tested this on my S3 and the notification pulldown worked for me, AxlMyk, I'm running stock 4.1.2.

Maybe I missed something, but I haven't tried it since then. Maybe someday I'll have a reason to.
I'm also stock OS.
