I bought some nice apps on my previous gen N7 and will probably buy the new N7... but I don't want to pay for the apps all over again. Am I able to transfer them over for free?

When you bought the apps in the Google Play Store it became tied to your gmail account. When you sign in to your account on the new N7, those apps will appear as "purchased" and all you have to do is redownload them :)

What's nice is that a bunch of these download automatically, if you backup your Nexus. It asks if you want to restore, and if you choose yes, it just downloads away!

What do you mean "backup" my Nexus? You mean sync it with my PC?

One more thing-- when I guy the new N7, I'm going to give my old one to my sister and her 5 yo daughter. Obviously, I'm going to log off my account before giving it to her. Since my apps are tied into my Gmail account, when I log off and she logs in, will those apps disappear from the home screen?

No, in the settings there's an item, I think, called backup/restore. It actually backs up to Google servers.

I'm thinking you answered your own question here - if the apps are tied to your Google account and you delete your account before handing it over, all of the apps you acquired under your account will disappear on that device. They'll be starting afresh. That would be my expectation - thinking any account-based OS would do that. Anyone want to dissuade me of that?

I just checked my Nexus, and it's actually "Backup and Reset." Then there's an option to check "backup my data."

The apps aren't removed from your device when you remove your Google account. You would only lose the apps that are on your device if you uninstalled them or did a factory reset. If you do uninstall them, you won't be able to download them again for free unless you log back into the Google account that they were purchased on.
