Can I update moto x pe to Oreo without problems?

My motoxpe is still going strong!
Lenovo tech support said OS couldn't handle Oreo, but I think that's just marketing bs.
Thoughts / advice would be highly appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you talking about finding a custom Oreo ROM developed for that specific phone? If there's no official system update from Lenovo, then that's your only option.

How does one know if the current operating system is capable of handling a newer operating system?

OS is Android 7. What happens if I download Android 10?
Can one skip operating systems, as one builds on another?
How does one know if doing so will brick the phone?

This site specifically says the phone will remain on 7.1.1, which means Moto never developed an official Oreo update for the phone: https://support.motorola.com/in/en/softwareupgrade

With Android devices, you can't install any random system update -- it has to be designed for that specific phone variant.
