Can I use hangouts like what's app

Hello simple question can I use hangouts like what's app with out being charged to send pictures etc if I don't use it as my text messenger app?

Hey Edward,

afaik, If you send a SMS/MMS, you will still get charged your carrier costs. If you send a message to someone also using hangouts, it will cost you data.
So, it all depends on the application of the user you are sending it to...

I use Hangouts for texting as well as for general chatting with people. If you send the message as a Hangouts message, it will only use data.
