Can I use my DX as an automated dash cam?

I have the motorola car dock, and have set the custom app to be the camcorder. Since the camera is not obstructed by the car dock, I have positioned it in a way that gives me a clear view of the road. So when I get in my car, I press the camcorder button, then the record button, and record my drive. Does anyone know of an application or way that I can set it up to automatically start recording once my phone enters car dock mode? Also is there a way to run the camcorder in the background, so I can still use the GPS at the same time and/or receive calls? Both actions seem to immediately close the camcorder application and stop whatever recording was being made.

I don't know about multitasking with the video recorder, but check out tasker to have it auto record when you dock. Its a bit complicated to set up, but i think it can do what you want.

tasker will do it. That program is amazing. I am OCD about my droid so I get lost in that program for hours at a time.

Once my DX arrives, I am going to record my drive to appointments and such because I encounter a lot of stupid people doing 45 on a 65!

lol well your not the only one who encounters those stupid people.. they seem to be everywhere..

what good does recording them do?
are you going to track them down later? haha

Just found this post... if you are still interested in such a solution, try our app: DailyRoads Voyager

Among many other features, it can also record video in the background. You can download for free from the Android Market.

I was just thinking about pretty much the exact feature set you have come up with in your app. Good job. I would like to download and try it out.

One question though, your "about us" section is a little light... and frankly I am a little concerned about sending files to your "cloud" with geocoded data, etc. Who are you guys, where are you based out of, etc? It's clear your terms of use and other legal mumbo jumbo are straight copy and paste and in some cases, the <insert business name here> tag is still visible, so I am not getting warm-fuzzies.

And I'd like to use your app. A little more info would be helpful. Believe me, I understand start-ups and the like, I am just asking for a little clarity is all.

Thanks, and best of luck with your new app.

Thanks for your encouraging comments and expressing your concerns. Even though many people don't read the privacy policy and terms of use, we have actually gone through the tedious process of reviewing what other similar (big) sites have included there, and created our own versions - admittedly with some copy and paste of paragraphs. Where exactly have you seen the <insert business name here> tag?

I don't want to sound as I am defending our disclosure policy, quite the contrary. I want to learn what people expect to see about our startup, and thanks again for bringing this to my attention. It seems we failed to extract the most important piece from other sites' "about us" and similar pages, namely who we actually are.

It is no secret that DailyRoads.com is registered to a company from Romania, a simple whois lookup reveals this. But, the team is international, and haven't yet decided where to actually establish our "official" headquarters. Wanted to first see what traction our Android app gets, and lately have focused our efforts on improving this app, leaving the main site as "a test environment" - as it is clearly stated on the header of every page.

The upload feature is disabled by default in the Android app, and users have to confirm two options to allow their geotagged files to be visible for the general public. This is because we value the privacy of our users.

But, as you point out, some users may want to know more about us than what is currently available on the main site. We'll work on this aspect, too, after the more pressing Android issues are sorted out...

Thanks and regards,
Robert Fejer
