Can i use twrp to flash/downgrade android 5.1.x on my moto x running 6.0.1?

I flashed a ROM from AICP website who had cooked a marshmallow ROM for moto x 2013 and it lags quite badly at times. I an wondering if I can simply flash a downgrade ROM, or whether there is something that is irreversibly changed in the upgrade process?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you would need to the .zip of the os from moto or use a rom like Cyanogen
