Can no longer read message log when I was originally able to.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and recently got the Gear S2. When I first set it up I was able to go back through my previous text messages and read them from the watch. Without adding any new apps or anything, seemingly out of nowhere when I go the the messages app, it says "No Messages." I've tinkered with some settings and everything appears to be in order.. any fixes for this?
