Can not write to external card

Hi

After last update (within 4.4.2 I think) the problem of writing to the external memory card is even worse than before.

Jota editor could never write there. Now also ES file explorer has problems copying (previously only renaming). Quickpic has problems copying, most often failure also corrupt files sometimes.

Stock apps like My Files and Gallery work somewhat better.

I use a Galaxy Note 3 with the "best quality class 10" external card I could find when I bought the phone.

I practically left other computers and has almost only used Note 2 and 3 during the last 18 months. All has worked well but now I am struggling.

The system is getting really difficult to work on. Copy failure all the time. And it is getting WORSE!

The Quickpic developers also appear to be irritated, see their error message, attached

When will Android fix this??

Can I do something more about it?

Yeah it's a Google policy since KK. Just root and fix the permissions in 5sec with either app from Play store or via Xposed module (or editing prop file). After that things will be like on JB! Just rocking! Or go back to JB like me, hate KK all together!

Ok, I am on a trip now, I can't root it immediately. Obviously I will have to look into it later.

But my impression is that it is more like an error for some applications. Gallery can often copy pictures, but Quickpic is almost hopeless after the last update.

If it was an Android policy, wouldn't all apps be completely blocked?

Well the new [lang.]permissions are only for 3-party apps. Stock apps that comes pre-installed with the phone should work as normal.

Also some 3-party apps seems to have been able to go around the problem, so some are working okay. However, seldom 100%.

Hmm, crazy guys, how did they come up with this??!! 😉

I haven't read so much about Android. I just think Google and Android have produced "rather open and free" well functioning software. But now this! What is the motive for such a restricting change?

Before rooting I will have to go back to My Files and Gallery.
I also need an editor. Is there anyone that works on the external card? Jota (pro) does not.

The link is definitely on topic and informative about FAT, thanks. But isn't the author "pro Google"?
He says he didn't want phones with external cards until now!
He also mentions system folders on the external card. Those could be put on the internal storage.
He also talks about the prevention of data theft. But as I understand the apps can still read all data, it is just writing that has been blocked. If the apps can read the data they can steal it.

The other side of the coin is that Jerry's Not Awesome App that steals your data no longer has write access to every file and folder on the SD card. Yes, previously any application that declared permission to read and write to the SD card was allowed to write files to any folder — including your system folders, and any folder something like a banking app might have made. Any type of file, too. That includes files that could be read when another app starts up and affect the settings or way that app works. It was a complete and total security nightmare, and why a lot of people — including yours truly — did not want phones with SD cards.

I thought it was enough security just to download apps from Google play.

I know the problems reading my Linux ext file system disks into Windows. But isn't it easier to solve that than creating all this mess. I would definitely rather fight the problem of reading my external card into windows than not being able to write to it. For file handling programs it is really a disaster. And if I read the card into Windows while it was in my phone there would be no problem at all??
I have definitely not read enough to give a final verdict, but I ask: Did Google make a mistake not giving the external card an ext file system???

I haven't paid much attention to this issue since my G2 didn't have a memory card, but now I have an M8 so it is an issue. I can't hook a flash drive to my phone and move music to the sd card. Can I hook the phone to a computer and copy to the sd card or do I need to put the card in my computer and copy to it?

@scottcraft
From what I read, my impression is you can write from the computer with a cable to the external card in the phone.
