Can"t sign in to YouTube

[Android Central Question]

I have an android box with Youtube v 1.0.5.6 installed. I want to sign in using my google account id. To do so, I open Youtube, then click settings. In settings, I select the "Sign in" icon. The result is that the icon appears highlighted or selected.. but, nothing else happens. No fields appear for me to enter user credentials. I have tried updating the YouTube app, but doung so produces a message indicating that the new version of youtube us not compatible with my android box is at version 6.0.1, kernal version 3.14.29. What can i do to sign in to Youtube on this Android box?
