Has anyone figured a way out to use it overseas with a diff sim card? Can it be unlocked by rooting it? Or should i not even bother taking it overseas? Can it be programmed to work with a different CDMA phone service?

I was told that once more carriers adopted LTE it would be a global device, however I'm not 100% sure on that. Reps are generally wrong.

The TBolt is not a "Global" phone (by VZW's definition). The SIM card in the TBolt does not support GSM, only LTE. Word is that eventually there will be LTE overseas, but not any time soon. So, no.

Although, I have used VZW "non-Global" phones many times while out of the country, becuase many countries support CDMA.

Frank, so as long as the phone carrier supports CDMA there is hope?

Using as an emergency phone is fine, but it may be cheaper to buy a cheap quad band gsm for international travel and use a local sim.

Witha that said, i have used my non world phone, overseas, it was $2/min, but varies depending on locale, see link above for rates

This would only work *IF* said country also ran their LTE on the same 700 Mhz frequency as Verizon and AT&T are/will be...

It's not just LTE compatibility that matters. The TBolt will only work on LTE systems that operate on the same frequency as Verizon's network. Even when other countries roll out LTE they could (and probably will) use frequencies that the TBolt cannot operate on.

On top of everything said, even if a country did have a carrier that ran LTE on 700 mhz, the tbolt still uses CDMA for voice. So you would still need CDMA roaming for voice.

If you are going overseas it makes a great door stop. But as a phone or web browser, forget it.

It will work on wi-fi, won't it? (Not as a phone, except with VoIP, but as a data only device?)

I kept my BB Storm 2 for just this reason. When I go abroad, I will just activate the phone for the trip.

"Abroad" and "Overseas" are too broad of terms for this discussion., Whether your VZW "non-Global" phone (ThunderBolt) will work Abroad or Overseas depends on where you are, exactly.

I just have a GSM phone that I use when I'm abroad. It's a blackberry though. Gross. At least it stays in the drawer most months. I'll probably buy a Sensation or whatever for the next time I'm abroad for an extended period of time.

Edit: and there are not literally "hundreds" of places you can use CDMA, there's a handful, and it's pretty random places.

Keep in mind, if you activate it on your LTE line, you'll need a new LTE SIM when you get back. But you probably meant throw a GSM SIM into it. :)
