Can we talk about the note 9 retail prices dropping like a rock?

It happens to all Samsung phones you'll find the S10 etc dropping like a stone now you can pick it up brand new at nearly half price on eBay etc.

As much as we all hate it the iPhone keeps its price more than any android phone

I don't hate it.
I really have no opinion on how well the iPhone holds its value.

I got my Note 9 last November. That may be the newest smartphone I've ever had. Usually I'm one generation behind. I usually just don't want to pay the new price. I haven't bought a phone from the carrier since 2012. Swappa is my source.

Supply and demand. No other alternate source for iOS, so Apple controls the supply. People may not be able to afford a new iOS device so people with used ones can charge almost whatever they want, and if people pay it, the price stays there.

Well said

Do i was gonna go s10e and i went to swappa and saw the note 9 mint condition barely pushing 450 us.

This phone sold for 1000 dollars a little less than a year ago. I'm frustrated because i don't wanna come out of pocket for a phone but the retail value is garbage beyond belief.

Devices are on a 6 month tech cycle or shorter. You're looking at the future my friend...unfortunately this "hobby" requires a strong constitution, a big shovel to sort out the self proclaimed experts on youtube, and a big wallet.:)

If you pay full price for these phones and resale value is all that matters to you then you are better off with the iPhone.

Last fall I bought my wife a 256gb iPhone XS Max at full price of $1250 (ouch!!!). I also bought my 128gb Note 9 from Best Buy during one of the many sales at $750.

Today I can sell her XS Max for about $900-950 and take the "loss" of $300-350. I can sell my Note 9 at $450-500 and take a $250-300 loss. It's close but I was out of pocket far less for the Note and I am actually taking less of a loss.

I have had every Note since the Note 2 and have not paid full price for any of them and have paid $700-750 for the last two. I probably could have held out and found a deal on the iPhone to knock it down $50-100 so I'd call this whole thing a wash.

Moral of the story...Don't pay full price to begin with.

I think Android is just too easy to get and since it's always a lower end market to test out the latest Android phone that's why the prices drop so fast.

Also the shorter update period as well.

Agreed; you wanna be first on the block... you're gonna pay.
I like the timing of the Note release, only a few months from the holidays. Verizon always does a 1 to 2 day sale on top of their regular holiday promotions. Last year was $300 off the Note 9 for 24 hours. And surprise, a $200 gift card to boot!
Sold my 8 for almost $500...no money out of pocket.
Looking forward to seeing and handling the 10, if I like it I can wait until December.

Yep. You just have to be patient. I was quite happy with my Note 8. I didn't need the Note 9 so I was happy to sit and wait for my price. Same will be true this time around.

Hi Folks,
Some thoughts about costs and upgrade rates from an OG Technoid. At least the latter is slowing (the rates too).

The vendors who make computers with cell phone components are running out of upgrade justifications to lighten our wallets (even contrived ones like unreplaceable batteries).

These devices are already at about maximum size limits for hand use--and lots of powerful and useful apps require tablet size screen real estate, if not LED TVs. For example, Wolfram mathematical simulations and most games aren't really for these devices, despite their amazing processing power. How much more can they really tweak the amazing biometrics and cameras? Here, we're about into picking nits. Anyone needing more will buy separate cameras or video recorders with tripods, filters and such. Really, the best thing added in the past couple of years are biometrics replacing the zillions of passwords we all kinda, sorta, manage.

Plus, the firmware and software upgrades can rival Microsoft for maintenance hassles.

But they'll keep the marketing hype machines whirring. Hey, capitalism is great as long as we don't fall for silliness. That said, if six helicopter wings extended from the new Galaxy 10 Drone to take aerial photos and strafe the neighbors, count me in :)

Take care of these well-designed electronics and they'll last a good while. Example: the GPS satellites have been humming for at 12,000 nautical miles for about 30 years. The basic electronics and even the atomic clocks adjusted for special and general relativity, earth wobble, etc, still work just fine. :)

A little fun perspective from an OG Technoid.

Regards

I have no idea why that is either. I mean Ive had a iphone briefly like about 6 years ago..didn't like it then, don't like it now.
The iPhone holds its value because there is no "bargain bin" version. For example, if your $800 Android phone gets lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair, you can go grab a cheap Android replace for a couple hundred bucks to tide you over until your next upgrage.

But with he iPhone, the cheapest one you can buy new is still like $600 and it's a model from 5 years ago. So it really boils down to supply and demand.

Yeah Samsung phones start off expensive and literally drop in price week on week after they are launched and then you can pick it up about 1/3 off RRP after about 3/4 months later and it stays in and around that price until a few months before the next S release etc it's always worked for me.

So unless there's a decent trade in deal on the current Note I will hold off and pick up the Note 10 nearer Christmas.

Android enthusiast have a plethora of manufactures and products to choose from (new and used) and I love that. Unfortunately that has an adverse effect on resale value if your selling.... while buyers rejoice.
I've never purchased at full retail, day of release pricing therefore for when I sell I am genuinely satisfied with the result. It's interesting to hear the complaints considering this trend has been going on for a while. But just in case, here's a PSA: the Note 10 resell price will plummet when the S11 is released, the 2020 S series resell price will plummet when the Note 11 is released.
As far as the iPhone and the resell value, they could sell them new for $200 and I wouldn't be tempted....LOL
