Can we work toward a STOCK usb tethering option? I dont want to use a 3rd party app as they seem to slow the speeds down... and I need the tether for work. I currently game on my Hero which does 1/2 the speed of my Optimus, so I'd love to get online and game with my Optimus's power :)

I don't believe this will ever be an option with this phone IMHO. This build has wired tethering completely removed. Typically in a Froyo build you can go to Menu > Settings > Wireless and network settings > Tethering and portable hotspot - and inside of this menu is the option for usb tethering. It appears this has been completely removed (not just hidden) and instead we only have Menu > Settings > Wireless and network settings > Portable hotspot, which is the native froyo wireless tethering. Also, it's not just the menu option thats removed, its the code that this menu option would activate is also completely removed. This would take a significant amount of work and I'm just not sure someone would do it when native wireless tethering, which requires no drivers and works with mac, PC, linux, is readily available and free.

If you'd like to use native froyo wireless tethering, you can use THIS EXPLOIT.

Thats my 2 pennies

This is what the tethering menu looks like on a device like N1:

One can dream (or work on) an AOSP ROM :) I would but the Android source just ticks me off lol. I just work on kernels. Nothing interesting to report here that hasn't already been done by others though.

It would be cool if we could run AOSP because that would mean Gingerbread :)

Has anyone made any progress with native usb tethering by chance or are we stuck still using some app to do it?
