can you connect external button\switch?

[Android Central Question]

I would like to know if I can attach a simple hand-held push button\plunger\switch which could then interact with an app that I am creating. Specifically, I would like to use this button like a stopwatch button to start\stop the stopwatch timer. I can't use bluetooth or WiFI as it needs to be accurate to 1/100th second and there is an inconsistent lag on wireless that far exceeds this accuracy.
