Can you record vocals with iPad?

Hi all, basically I don't have GarageBand yet and it's about 700mb to download. Problem is I've already used up about 3.5gb out of my 5gb data and it's only mid-January. So I just wanted to double check before getting it. I don't have a mic or anything, can I just record using GarageBand without a mic? And if there's a built in iPad mic, how's the quality of it?
