Android Central Question

Hi everyone. Time to upgrade, currently have an S8.

I am choosing between the S20 4g with 8gig of ram or the S20 5g with 12gig ram.

I am pulled towards the S20 5g as it has the extra 4gig of ram.

However I am wondering if 5g can be turned off so I will only receive 4g. I have read people are having issues with the connection constantly swapping between 4g and 5g.

4g speeds are great as always but the 5g isn't so great and when connected to 5g the connection is apparently slow and unusable. Making the phone a nightmare to use while connected to mobile data.

Is there an option to turn 5g off.

I am in the uk.

Yes you will have the option to choose 5g or LTE in the settings, went to LTE myself since 5g is a no go atm.

I don't see a 5G option on my device. Is it possible that's because I don't subscribe to 5G. Might be an option for the OP unless 5G is part of his plan.

What I have noticed is it on shows the 5g option on my S20 Ultra if I am in a 5g coverage area.

Seems strange i am also on 4g network, in the settings i could however go down from 5g to 4g. Are you sure it is a 5g s20?

S20 Ultra 5G USA unlocked here and I don't see any setting to turn off 5G and yes my unlimited data account has 5G. Where in the settings is it supposed to be?

I'm on the same device on Verizon but 5G is not part of my plan yet. I think it's supposed to be in the settings but I can't see mine. I'm guessing I need to subscribe and hoping it's not a malfunction.

Good point I never bothered to look before but I don't see it as well.

Are you subscribed?
It's automatically included in their do more and play more unlimited plans. I looked at my plan details and it shows I have 5G included.

I have the unlimited without 5G....it may actually be cheaper to switch.

I wonder if it works without settings once you enter a 5G area.

Can you turn 5g off if wanted in settings?
That's the option we are not seeing and we don't know when that option pops up. Currently we aren't seeing it in the setting and not sure if that's because we aren't in the 5G area. For example, my plan has 5G but I'm not in a 5G area. I don't see any setting for 5G.

Interesting, so in settings >connection >data no wording for 5G like how it says 2g/3g/4g auto toggle?

I am out on sick leave for 2 to 3 , months and there is no 5G at home. Closest 5G is in New York City where I work. I'll only switch to a plan that includes 5G if it cheaper than my current unlimited. Thing is I have a combined plan for 3 phones and 2 of them don't need 5G. I know you can get different plans now for each phone I'll look into it
