Can You Turn Off the Pop-up Text Notifications???

I was battling with this issue on my Google Pixel. Followed a number of the instructions on this forum but nothing seemed to get rid of that "Pop up" notification. Eventually my fix was the contact I was talking to had "custom notification" turned on. Meaning that no matter what settings i would set the whats app settings to it would only listen to the "custom notification" settings that where set for that contact.

After turning off the custom notification for that contact everything seemed to work as it should. I don't ever remember setting custom notifications for this contact at any point but i'm glad I was able to fix this. Select 'Show Silently' not sure if it then doesn't notify you by sound. But will show up in notification tray

I signed up just to comment, this annoyed me so much. You have to deselect (untick) the "Show high priority message notifications" in the Notification settings. Solved. So thankful.

For Android 9
Go to settings, search for "custom restrictions" then check the box "don't pop notifications on the screen"

Is there a way? They're kinda annoying. I don't want texts popping up while I'm watching videos.

I don't know if there is a way to do that. However, I went into my game space app, and added YouTube as a game I want game mode to turn on for. I made it to where game mode turns off my notifications so now when I go into YouTube, my graphics improve and my notifications will not pop up
