I know people don't like it, and don't want to pay any type of ETF. But we (most people) signed a 2yr contract understanding that is is a 2yr term with an ETF. If you don't like the term then there are options to activate with out a contract attached, but people don't want to pay for that either.

I knew that you could break your contract in such a scinario, but i did know there was a term change floating around. Thanks. May come in handy, i wanna try something else for a while. It seems verizon is not concerned about making money off of new devices. I been waiting forever for something good to drop while other carriers are throwing new devices left and right.

ETF's are shenanigans.

It takes no more work to cancel a line without an ETF than it does with. ETF's are extortion and are just a way for carriers to rip off consumers more.

Verizon came out with the truth on this. On 7/1 they will decided if they pass on the cost to us. If they don't then this wont work. Now say they do charge you say .20 more but then take another charge and make it .20 less and your total does not change again this will not work. Only way out is if they hit you with the new charge and don't change anything more and your paying more.

Notice any coincidence with those numbers? ETFs are because we're too cheap to buy our own phones so they're pro-rated. Essentially it's a guarantee that Verizon will get the money they loaned you to buy the phone back.

Got a copy of an invoice for that? I'd be impressed if they got $100 off, electronics margins tend to be razor thin. As of a year ago, cost of components alone was $185 for the OG Droid, add to that assembly, marketing and stocking overhead per phone and then the one time R&D charges and it really starts to stack up. The remember that any modern phone has a more expensive CPU, screen, etc. And Motorola isn't a charity, rest assured they charge VZW more that it costs to create the phone.

I've checked other plans and most are equal or more than I'm paying on Verizon. Plus the fact that Verizon is the best company for me at least, I've had no dropped calls or trouble getting a signal in cities or anything. I hate the fact that they are raising still more. It's a joke, but you have to pay to be with the best carrier. JMO

Sure, it's $185 if I'm Verizon and I buy 1 single phone from Motorola..

R&D? Companies do invest tons of money in R&D.. I highly doubt Motorola invests anywhere near, even REMOTELY near what Apple invests in R&D.

Most carriers are going to buy phones in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. It's simple economics, when you buy in bulk, you get a discount. You can rest assured, that with no ETF, Verizon is still making money off you.

Let's not even factor in how much an SMS at 160bytes vs an email at 5KB.

Regardless of razor thing margins, they are still making money. It's assinine to think they only make money off you on hardware from an ETF when you cancel a contract.

You don't understand, this is $185 just for the components Motorola needs to buy from their suppliers at bulk discounts. It's not really COGS, that includes the cost of the circuit board manufacture, assembly, boxing, etc.

Right now I am in a grandfathered data/text contract... unless they decide to cancel that and not give unlimited back for a decent price, i have no reason to cancel. Although somewhat expensive, their sevice has been flawless so far (customer service is another story) But no complaints so far on connectivity. And that's what i need from a phone company.

To- HeftyOrb - as far as signing contract with ETF and trying to get out, remember we signed a contract, but now verizon is changing that contract. Inside the contract it says they have the right to change prices, but we have the right to reject that without an ETF. So that is actually part of the contract signed. No cheating involved.

Yup, My new phone bubble got POPPED when I started checking in to this, we're just paying about $130 average a month on 2 phones here (one of them NOT a Smartphone). So I'll just wait for the Droid Bionic or Samsung Galaxy S II to drop at VErizon.

I am seriously considering moving 2 of them to Cricket. Does this cause all of the lines to cancel? Would I be able to port my numbers first?

Then don't sign the contract, Don't purchases a phone at a SUBSIDIZED price. Buy your phone at $550 instead of $200, Don't SIGN the 2yr AGREEMENT, and you will have nothing to worry about on this topic at all.

But if you got your phone at the subsidized pricing the YOU DID AGREE to all the terms of a 2yr AGREEMENT including an ETF of $350 for your Droid. Remember that your ETF will drop $10 for each full billing cycle on a $350 ETF. Just one more point that you, me, and I'll say at least Half of the other users on this forum agreed to
