You might have connect to your routers set up page, not to an internet address. Have a look at your browsers address field, if you see something like "http://192.168. ..." then it's your router's set up page on your home network.
Note, only this set up page would demand the router's password (I take it that you didn't mean the WiFi password).

Clear your browser's address field and execute a line like "Google" :)

also, the traditional thing to try: reset your modem and router (unplug each, or...the paper clip in the slot trick)...

Welcome to Android Central! I'm trying to understand exactly how this issue was coming up. First of all, do you mean you have a Nexus 7? I ask this because I've seen cheap no-name tablets advertised as 'Google Android 7" Tablet', and those no-name tablets will be more likely to have odd glitches than the flagship Nexus 7.

What do you mean by "internet icon"? Do you mean the stock Browser, or is it some kind of wifi toggle widget? IHow does it prompt you to enter your router password--in a dialog box, or on a browser page? You should only be prompted to enter your router password when you first connect to your home wifi network (which you do by turning on the tablet's wifi, and not just by opening the Browser). If you're connecting for the first time, or if you made the device "forget" the connection, then a dialog box should appear (not the same as a browser window), asking for you to enter your router password. Once you've connected, by default the device will remember the password, so you shouldn't have to reenter it each time.

A screenshot or a photo of the screen when you see that password request would be useful to see.

I cannot reset the router. Its not my router and its owner wont reset it for me. Very helpful!

Anyway its the settings screen, then wifi. Its got the internet router on but when I click it and enter my router password, I cannot press connect because its greyed out. Im seriously thinking of throwing this tablet out of the window. Its just rubbish. I dont know how to put a screen photo on here.

The Connect button will be greyed out unless the password has enough characters. I believe it has to be at least 8 characters if the router has WPA-PSK security. How many characters are in the password you're entering, and are you certain it's the correct one?
