Question Oneplus 10 Pro & BT Router issues - RESOLVED

Hi,

I have recently upgraded from a OnePlus 8 Pro to a OnePlus 10 Pro 5G and have a really weird issue concerning WiFi connectivity to a BT Smart Hub 2 router.

I have two BT Routers (one in the house and one in the home office). In the office the OnePlus 10 connects to the Wifi OK but shows 'No data Connection'. Whereas the old OnePlus 8 is connected to the same router and has a perfect data connection. I have the two phones alongside each other on my desk with the 8 connected fine and the 10 connected but showing no data connection. To rub it in the 10 connects fine to the the BT Smart router in the house.

I initially assumed it was a setting in the 10. So I've scoured the internet with little success but, as a result of this, changed settings such as using random MAC addresses, etc. to no effect. I've also had the two phones side by side and scrolled through the wifi settings screens (all of them) to check that they are the same - they are. I've also tried turning off the 5G on the office router (as suggested by one post one a random forum) to no avail.

So then i assumed that there was some setting in the router but couldn't find anything. I then purchased a TP Link access point and set it up and hard wired with RJ45 it to the office router. The phone, once again, connected to it perfectly but showed no data connection. I happen to have a spare BT router kicking around (BT keep sending them to me) and so installed that as the office router. Exactly the same issue.

The only way it i can connect to the office BT Router via Wifi is to connect the old 8 and use it's hotspot. Connecting the 10 to the 8's hotspot works!!! However, this is not a long term solution.

Any ideas? Any obscure settings I've missed? All help/suggestions gratefully received.

UPDATE: Have spent more time looking at what is going on between the router and my OnePlus 10 c/w the 8, I can see that the 8 is being assigned an IPv4 address while the 10 is being assigned an IPv6 address. I've now set a static IPv4 address for the 10 in the router and it appears to have connected and is staying connected. Fingers crossed.

Welcome to Android Central! Is the 10 able to connect to other wi-fi networks, like public ones at your local library or coffeehouse?

For the time being, you can probably change the router from static to dynamic addresses -- just keep using IPv4, and disable IPv6.

Yes, the 10 is able to connect to other networks. I'm pretty convinced that this is an IPv4 vs IPv6 issue as the fix i wrote about in the update above worked until i rebooted the phone. It then reverted to the same behaviour.

So I then turned off IPv6 on the router which, initially, didn't help. However, i then spotted that the phone, although showing as a connected device on the router, wasn't showing on the IPv4 address table. So, i rebooted the router and phone which, again initially, didn't help with the 10 still not on the IPv4 address table but still showing as connected. However, I then had a thought and, using the Wifi assistant, forgot the network and re-connected re-entering the password, etc. and initially thought I'd cracked it as the 10 started showing the the IPv4 address table and had internet connectivity.

To test, I then rebooted the phone again and, once again, upon reconnection, it's showing 'no data connection'. It's there in the IPv4 address table and is shown as connected, etc. Very frustrating.
 
Is your router WiFi 7, 6, or something older?

Wi-Fi bands: The BT Smart Hub 2 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands.
Wi-Fi standard: The BT Smart Hub 2 uses dual band AC Wi-Fi 5.

Which devices are connected to the 2.4 GHz band, and which devices are connected to the 5 GHz band? How many devices in total are connected to either band? Are you using channels that have the strongest signals without any overlap with neighbouring signals?

In order to try and get the phone connected, I purchased a tp-link USB Type-C to RJ45 Gigabit adapter.

When plugged into the network and the phone the phone shows a symbol which i have had no luck in understanding. It is: <...>!

There is no connectivity despite me following the protocol of turning off both wifi and mobile data before attaching the adapter.

Any thoughts?
 
Update: I appear to have got this working now.

I did find one of my access points was incorrectly configured as a DCHP server on the network but that doesn't appear to have been the issue. The phone couldn't see that access point when connecting anyway.

What does appear to have resolved the issue is changing the IPv6 address allocation mode from the default of 'both' to 'Stateful' on the router - the other options being 'Stateless' and 'Off'. The inbuilt router help tells me "When Stateful mode is selected, addresses are assigned via DHCP. In Stateless mode, addresses are self assigned by the device using IPv6 Autoconfiguration.".

I'll keep an eye on it and, if anything changes, provide an update but, so far so good.

BTW: I worked out that the only reason the BT router in the house was connecting was because, at some time in the past, I'd turned off the 5GHz band to connect some smart switches and failed to turn the 5GHz back on! No idea why, when i turned the 5GHz off on the office router it didn't connect. Maybe i needed to reboot both the router and the phone.
