Cannot connect to PC using USB Y-cable

The USB Y-cable that comes with the spare battery and charger kit does not allow the phone to connect to a PC. It will charge the phone and spare battery, but it will not allow the phone to sync or mount the SD card. In order to mount the SD card, I have to use only the original USB cable.
