So using Amazon music there is an option to select the root directory on where the downloads go - I chose the SD external card however I cannot find either via the files app or ES File Explorer the music - it's frustrating because I prefer to use the Samsung Music Player but for some reason even though I choose to download the songs within the Amazon music app to the device and the external SD card it doesn't get recognized when I open up the Samsung Music Player very frustrating indeed.

It very well may be just like how music downloads through Google Play. They go to a folder that is not accessible to prevent piracy and this is the reason music apps can't find it.

You can avoid this by downloading the music on a computer and then copying it over to a folder on the phone. This will make it accessible to any music apps.

If you read the fine print, depending on your subscription, your downloads are 86'd when you sign out.

All I'm saying is that it's very misleading since within the Amazon Music App it has options to download and even close the destination i.e. internal or SD Card. I just think it's weird and I'm not sure I like not having access to all folders on my phone. I understand copyright protection but the app uses generally accepted terms and words that mean something different.

Exactly like Spotify. You won't find it. Downloaded music is only playable in the app.

/Android/data/com.amazon.mp3/files

Remove the .nomedia file from this folder and your amazon music will show in samsung music player.
But you probably won't be able to play the files in another player because of the copyright protection.

This is why even though I have Prime I still choose to buy the songs rather than use the download for free option or listen option. When you buy the song via the app it downloads to both your Amazon library and your Samsung music player. Defeats the purpose I know but at least I don't have to use the Amazon app to play the track.
