Cannot read text messages on Galaxy Watch 3

I have a Galaxy S10+. I can read old emails. See contacts etc. I cannot see text messages unless they have been sent to me or from me since the BT watch was paired. I'm assuming I'm supposed to be able see previous messages as I do with everything else? How do I fix this? I use the built in Samsung Messages app.
