Cannot stream videos from my NAS on Mate 20 X

I use mainly solid Explorer (a file manager) to browse and play back videos from my local NAS using MX player. I can copy and move files perfectly fine as well as open pictures, but I cannot play any videos. It takes a good 5 seconds for the video to start playing in mx player and after around ten seconds the video freezes and won't load the rest. The same thing happens with the asus zen file manager. The only one that works is the built in huawei file manager. No problem playing back videos from the nas using mx player.

I've already tried whitelisting the apps in the battery settings and turning and allowing write to system files although that one is probably not the issue. Don't see any relevant wifi or connection settings either.

What's the NAS formatted as? If it looks like an NTFS drive, you may have problems without some sort of Samba app.
