Android Central Question

Hi everyone, I'm struggling with this issue hope you can help! My phone has been giving me memory issues for a while. Telling me I am maxed out. I keep moving files to free up memory and still keep getting this error. THis is not the issue I am asking about but just for context...

I started getting the "android.process.media has stopped" error pop up every 2 seconds a few days ago and no matter how many times I say OK it keeps returning.

I am once again trying to free up memory because my phone needs to update, which MAY resolve some of this issue but I cannot even update the OS because ... *dun dun dun* there isn't enough memory!

I cannot back up my photos via google drive or email, because the camera gallery app quits as soon as it launches, with the same "android process media has stopped" error displaying again and again.

I cannot delete photos from the gallery for same reason. It won't stay open although I do see the files there when i launch the gallery, before it quits half a second later. My folders are all there and the thumbnails show the photo images that it should. But as mentioned it quits.

I have just tried repeatedly to back up the files to my PC to get them off my phone and cannot do that this way either, because via USB I can navigate to DCIM and then Camera but all DCIM folders are empty??! Showing 0 files. I have no idea what is happening. I need a new phone as this one is a few years old now but I don't want to lose my photos.

I navigated to the cloud backup options via the phone settings/menus and there are 2 options - dropbox or samsung cloud. I have never used samsung cloud but thought what the heck might as well try. I created an account and navigate to the back up option only to find there is not even a photos option! There are options to back up all, sms, mms, phone logs etc. but not photos/files??! What is this insanity? I thought maybe they are including "photos" in the other options somehow and figure I will do a full back up and see when I log into the account on desktop what files have been uploaded (if my photos appear). So jumped through all these hoops...

...Only to find, with my desktop still on windows 7 (yes I'm old school), I cannot even download/install the Samsung Gallery app/program needed to view my files in the Samsung cloud. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I don't know what else to do. I have been going in circles now for 2 hours trying to just view my photos and back them up.

Any useful suggestions welcome!

p.s. Other suggested solutions I have already tried include:

-making sure the phone is unlocked while accessing android files in windows explorer on desktop/pc

-turning off auto-sync to stop the error popping up on my phone

-clearing cache (I've done this multiple times and it still says my memory is totally maxed out; I even deleted Whatsapp and a few things from the "Miscellaneous files" section in the Storage area of my Android settings, to try and free up some space

-I have not done a factory reset because I want to make sure my photos are first backed up before I do that reset and lose everything.

Thx in advance for any help you can offer.

Welcome to Android Central! First, which phone do you have?

Second, when you connect via USB to the computer, swipe down the notification panel and tap the USB icon -- make sure MTP is selected. If it isn't, the phone is probably just charging via USB, and not allowing data transfer.

Third, are a lot of photos on the SD card? Process.media errors can be due to corrupted media files, which usually happens on an SD card.
