Can't access the Internet with my Nexus 4

Hi all!

I'm new to the androidcentral forums and finally made an account to ask a question. I'm sure there are plenty of people who do that so: sorry in advance!

Let me explain everything in detail, in hopes of finding a solution to my problem:

- yesterday i was at the movies, so i needed to set my phone to silent (long press on the power button)
- after that I wanted to unsilence my phone, but when i tried to long press the power button nothing popped up. instead it locked my phone once i let go. basically ignoring the long press.
- thought i was just fumbling around so i ignored it and set my phone to loud via the volume buttons
- today i was having a weird bug, that i have seen once or twice over the last few months: my phone could not connect to the internet. bummer. what i usually do is shut my phone down and start it up again. the problem this time was that the long press did not work. since i can't yank out the battery and a quick google-search didn't tell me of another way to shut it down, i started burning through the battery so the thing would shut down on its own
- after a huge while it did and i connected it to the charger and everything worked fine. although there still were some problems with connecting to the internet, i chose to wait it out and see.
- that was several hours ago and i can't seem to find a way to access the internet on my phone

I tried troubleshooting the problem, but searching the internet, i found no one with the same problems i have.

1. i have wifi AND mobile data on at all times. both are connecting fine (full bars), but there is no data being exchanged. they both work. i can call people, so there is no issue there and i am currently on my laptop using the same router as my phone would
2. in the status bar thing it shows the two connections, but they are greyed out. i found this --> Gray Wifi - Nexus 4 is connected but no internet, other devices on the same network has internet. : nexus4
but the guy only has this with wifi, and apparently has a modded phone
3. I have a STOCK nexus 4, android version 4.2.2
4. i tried to reboot the connections by turning them off and on again and didn't really work. it got a connection for a second, because my stock newsfeed app only showed "no internet connection" until then and after it actually showed some news. after that it was gone though and i could not access anything internet-based
5. i managed to turn on skype a second ago and it showed the right people to be online, but after trying to start a conversation with someone the app couldn't load anything. earlier today the humble bundle app (also requires a connection) has crashed because i had no net
6. i shut down and restarted the phone multiple times and removed the sim and inserted it again as well. did not try a factory reset

I hope my post was detailed enough so that someone finds a solution and that later people with the same problem may find this helpful.

TL;DR: my phone won't access the internet. it IS connected, but the status icons are greyed out. no data coming to the device.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

ugh. if a mod could delete this, that would be great.

the solution was: the phone automatically prioritizes wifi if you are close to a saved hotspot. if that hotspot is busted, the phone still tries to access that, before going mobile, even if it does not receive any actual connection. turning off wifi made it work. rebooting my router meant that now everything is functioning

If your phone freezes, press and hold both of the volume buttons and the power button at the same time until the phone resets. I have had to use this a few times when my phone crashed.

No need to delete... Your solution might help someone else. :)

Leave it. It helps others. I didn't know this and I'm glad to know it now.
