so yeah, I've been a little behind with setting up my voicemail the last 5 months or so....

I finally get around to doing it, and I can't seem to access it. I dial *86 and it just rings.

That is the correct way of doing it, or hold down the 1 button for 3 seconds. Depending on the ROM you are using the voicemail button on the phone dial screen may not work or may be mapped to visual voicemail.

have you tried google voice? its free visual voice mail. check it out its a really great service. it wont fix your problem so much as make it irelivent.

I have been tempted to try it for a long time now but I do not want to change my phone number that everyone knows to one of Google's offered numbers, or have them port my number and terminate my VZW contract just for the GV features.

You don't have to do either. You can set it up so that your phone calls to your existing number get forwarded to Google Voice without really having to change a thing. The app actually will walk you through it.

wow! you dont have to do any of that. during the setup you select i wonly want to use voice mail. on your phone it changes your voicemail dial number. you dont even dial voice mail you just play them from your inbox if you want or jsut read them. no contract voided or numbers ported or changed.

Got it working finally, after close to 30 minutes on the phone. I've used google voice but didn't care for it. the transcriptions are usually way off, and playing the recorded sound files is kind of a pain.

Hey Gunner,

Thanks for the info. I thought I had to change my actual phone number, not the voicemail number. That is simple enough. Just change *86 to the Google number right?

the google voice app will walk you through all that. the app does everything but press the ok button for you. its pretty pain free.

the hilarity of the transcriptions is part of the charm.
