When I try to check if there are any updates for my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3, not only does it say:

Status
Software is up to date
Status last checked on

...and there is NO Last Checked Date.....:-\

But when I do "Check New", it tries to connect for while then says:

Service Unavailable
To check for system updates, go to Settings > About device when service is available
Exit

This is the case whether I have 4G or if Wi-Fi is on or off while in good Wi-Fi location.

What is the deal with that?????

You don't mention what version you are currently running - if you're already on the latest version (4.1.2, at least for a Verizon SGSIII), then there won't be any updates available.

I am on Android Version 4.0.4

Kernel3.0.8-1092717
Baseband I535VRLHRE

..and it's not just that there are no updates available, but that the phone cant even check.

Have had the SGS3 for about 7 weeks. My previous one, bought for full retail to keep unlimited data and save my upgrade, suddenly failed and I was sent a *like new, refurbished* one from VZW overnight under warranty....might even have benn new, looked pristine. Has been fine in all other respects.

You might need a new sim card, it solved the same problem that other users were having.

Sounds right....on hold with VZW now. They acknowledge that 4.12 is latest as of 3/1/13, Made your suggestion below...getting transferred to 2nd tier support now, what they call 'Advanced Tech Support'.

im having the same problem too with an ausrion replacement. my phone is stock with 4.1.1 and i know my last phone had 4.1.2 and every time i check update it says service unavailable. i have also used the SIM card that ausrion provided and still doesn't work. what now?

The 2nd tier support person that helped me was very nice, as usual. She had me go to Settings > Application Manager > All (top right), select Google Services Framework and Clear Data, then Force Stop. Then she had me do it again as her noted said sometimes this needs to be done twice. That did not resolve the issue even after a restart.

Next she had me remove the battery and the SIM card and she sent new setup or provisioning info to the phone. She had me try again and still same failure message:
Service Unavailable
To check for system updates, go to Settings > About device when service is available
Exit

Finally she had me boot into recovery mode (Power on with up volume, home and power) and choose clear cache then restart. Same out come.

After this she said it could be the phone they sent me has a fault. She was very surprised it did not come with 4.1.2 on it and that it has 4.04. So she is sending me a replacement phone and is including a 4G SIM card with it in case that is related. I suppose I could also go to a VZW store and ask to try a different SIM card, but I think I will just let the replacement phone arrive Tuesday.

Wish I could report there's an easy way to fix this, but we tried a few things. Good luck with yours.
