'Can't connect to Maps. Try again in a few minutes' - Local guides

This error appeared fairly recently when trying to upload photos to Google Maps and in spite of clearing the app cache, setting time and date to auto and uninstalling Maps updates, I'm still getting this error.
I only upload photos to maps over wifi, so I don't think it's a network issue.
I'm loath to hit CLEAR DATA in the Maps app, which has been suggested elsewhere, although it will probably sync back I imagine.
Normal day to day Google Maps use isn't affected and works without a hitch, just the uploading of photos in the contribute mode.
Anyone else come across this glitch?

I'm receiving the same error on the desktop - server error.

I got this same error a couple of times the last time I used Google Maps as well. I wasn't sure why because I had a solid cell signal at the time, three or four bars.
