Can't decide between H8 or Moto Z Play

That's a sweet deal for people who hate security patches and never want new versions of Android.

For the rest us, the honor 8 is worth the extra $100.

Just sharing it for those considering the moto z play. Honor has committed to software updates but my experience with updates on the honor 5x has been mediocre. The honor 8 has been pretty good, though it has only been out a short time.

Fair, but some people care more about the other aspects of the phone. Plus, Moto has been awesome with security updates thus far.

Security updates shouldn't be an issue for 2 years on any device. OS developers were court ordered to do monthly security patches this year.

I actually now that I have gotten used to it and I'm starting to like it a lot this phone surprises me how silky smooth it is

Totally agree with this. I got the Honor 8 about 10 days ago and for sure it's a good deal. EMUI is different but not as bad as it's made out to be. It's quite a cohesive smooth experience. The camera is very solid, performance has been good, the fingerprint scanner is possibly one of the most consistent I've used, the phone looks even better in person and overall experience has been very enjoyable. And a bonus, it's received 2 security patch updates since I've had it (latest one today).

That was a good deal I got mine at 329.99 and glad I did. If you don't mind me asking what is your experience buying used or was this your first used phone?

I've bought many used phones before. Have no problems with it. They're fast and are in good condition.

I love Moto software and definitely would have gotten a Moto Z if not for a couple problems. First, location of fingerprint sensor. I find it cumbersome to use the bottom front the phone for fingerprint. The rear of the device is much more natural. I understand the mods eliminate this possibility for Moto Z, but it's still an issue. Second problem is overall size. 5.5 inch screens are too large for me to use one handed. 5.2 w slim bezels is perfect. I switched from S7 edge to Honor 8 specifically for these 2 reasons. Plus touchwiz is hot garbage, but that's another story.

Moto Z Force which I owned for a while is not comparable to the Honor 8 at all. It's more comparable to the Nexus 6p which I have that model now too. I found the two to be almost identical with the exception of the mods of course. The 6p interface was the same and performance was pretty much the same. For the money the 6p is the way to go.

Why did you get rid of the Z Force?

Why did you get rid of the Z Force?
I actually used to be with Verizon so I've owned the original Droid Turbo which by the way is still one of the best devices on the market. It allowed me to discover just how good the Moto software interface was. I've owned both the s7, s7 edge and the tab s2 tablet. I got rid of those quick bc of the terrible software. Anyways Verizon messed my billing all up so I dropped them and went to Cricket. I will say that my Z Force worked fine with Cricket but for me personally, i wanted nothing to do with Verizon any longer and the Z Force was bloated with Verizon apps. I alao had the Moto and generation 46mm smart watch. I ended up selling the entire kit with all my Moto mods too, to a cell phone store for over a grand as a package deal. I replaced the Z Force with the Nexus 6p bc the 6p is basically the same phone as the Moto Z family. Pure Android interface. This is why I stated that the Moto Z play isnt comparable to the Honor 8. You're getting two totally different devices and experiences with these two. The Moto Z play is more similar to the Nexus 6p but inferior performance wise and screen resolution wise. The Honor 8 has a unique and different feel and experience. I f I were choosing between the Z play and Honor 8 I'd choose the Honor 8. With the obvious exception that the Z play has the mods and stronger battery, your overall experience will be more enjoyed with the Honor 8. Faster processor. More ram. It's way more user friendly wirh one hand. These two just aren't comparable really by just the sheer size of the phone alone. 5.5 vs 5.2 real world is a huge difference. If you want the larger screen then of course get the Z play. For the money if it's not the screen size you care about the honor 8 offers way more than the Z play for the money. The Z play is what? 400 plus?? The honor 8 can be had right now for 300 I think. I paid 349 for mine. If you're getting a Moto then jump it up to the regular Moto Z or actually just get the Nexus 6p which will experience wise be identical to the Z play but far exceed in performance and screen resolution. Right now I have the Honor 8 and the 6p both very much flagship specs with more than well below market value. Bang for your buck. Remember with Moto your paying 25 percent more just for their advertising alone. Econmics come into play with the Moto line up or the Z lineup. Back to Verizon I also got tired of being locked to only their devices. I wanted to try out different phones. I let my Sony Xperia X go which by the way has the same processor as the Moto Z which is slower than the Honor 8 processor. I've enjoyed the Honor 8 as I briefly owned the blue model before exchanging it for my 6p. I keep two phones. One larger screen and one smaller screen for a one hander device and something I can put in my pocket. You get that too with the Honor 8 plus the bang for your hard earned money. These two devices just aren't comparable in my opinion. The 6p is more comparable to the Z play. It's hard to compare the Honor 8 to any device on the market. It's just that different and unique. Last word of advice, honestly although these aren't comparable, you can't go wrong with either that's for sure. Just the Honor 8 specs and value out weigh the Z play.

Thanks for the great insight! Off topic question here regarding the Honor 8. Do you ever use it connected to a car via bluetooth? I've read one review on amazon that said the bluetooth was flaky and the controls from their vehicle worked 10% of the time. This would be crazy if the case and I'd think I'd read more about this issue if so.

I've not personally tried mine yet as I sold my new truck a few months back bc I was tired of paying mortgage type payments on it lol. So my vehicle I have now doesn't have the Bluetooth connection. However I have two different JBL speakers that I use on a regular basis and my Honor 8 hasn't missed a beat hooking up to either of them. My thoughts are that as long as the vehicle is of a newer model with latest technology that you won't have any troubles. Bluetooth on mine had been good and would be in a newer model car or truck too. The phone is top notch all the way around.

Yeah my personal thoughts are that the Honor will pair and work fine with Bluetooth devices as long as the receiving end of the Bluetooth is of good quality if that makes sense. Some Bluetooth receiving or outputs are of not of the best build and quality which would make any device have issues with connections. I know when I had my new 2015 Z71 Colorado which was a GM product the infotainment system was a pretty good one so all of my phones back then never had any issues in my truck. I guess it would come down to the quality of the manufacturer's system that throws out the Bluetooth signal to depend on hiccups with a connection I would think. I could be totally wrong. If so someone who has deeper knowledge might step in and better explain.
