Can't edit contacts. Pencil replaced with "Add Contact" option.

Hello, about a week ago I noticed that I could no longer edit my contacts. Typically, you can click on a contact and on the top-right there will be a pencil to edit the contact. However, that icon has been replaced with a little person with a "+" sign with the text displaying "Add to contacts" (when hovered over). I believe that if you click on the 3 little dots on the top right, there may be an edit option there; however all there is now is: Delete, Share, and Place on Home Screen. The same options appear when I long press a contact. Pressing the "Add to contacts" does absolutely nothing.

I've already tried exporting and deleting all contacts, clearing the data and cache of the Contacts, Hangouts, and Messaging apps in settings, deleting all contacts, and importing the contacts again. In addition, I've granted the Contacts app all permissions. Another thing I tried was deleting all the contacts and not importing and adding a new contact after that. However, I am still unable to edit contacts (except for my personal profile).

The only thing that seems to work is if I download another Contacts app and edit the contacts from there. Ironically the new contacts app uses the original app that I'm having problems with to edit contacts.

Phone: Moto X Pure Edition
OS: Marshmallow 6.0
Provider: Verizon

Welcome to Android Central! When you select the contact, are you doing so from within the actual Contacts app, or from the contacts list in the Phone/Dialer app?

From the Contacts app itself.

Unfortunately that did not work. I tried it twice. The last time I remember being able to edit contacts was right after I added a contact via the Hangouts app. Afterwards, I could edit the older contacts I had, but not the new ones. I looked and found what I thought was an answer to my problem. I deleted all the contacts and cleared the data and cache in both Hangouts and the Contacts app. Unfortunately this made all my contacts unable to be edited.

I deleted my Google account from the accounts page and re-added it, this seems to have solved the problem. None of my settings or data was lost in the process. Thanks for the help.
