In the Contacts app, the Search at the top (within the Contacts app) used to show all [synced?] contacts. Now the results seem to only show contacts I have viewed (i.e. tapped into the contact) since the issue occurred. i.e. If I search for a contact that exists in the account, it doesn't show up if I haven't since viewed it. This started happening recently, after I restarted my phone, just a normal restart which wasn't even an update. So I've been manually scrolling to the contact, which, with around 2000 contacts and even using the letter jump by scrolling on the far right, takes time. I tried clearing cache, restarting the phone, and using Safe Mode, but these did not resolve the issue.

1. How can I get all contacts to show up again in the in-app Search in the Contacts app, without having to view the contact first?

2. Secondly, the system-wide Search at the bottom of the homescreen (or top of the app menu screen after swiping up from the homescreen) shows even fewer contacts - not even ones I've viewed - although "Home settings > Search settings > Control search results > Contacts" is enabled. How do I fix this as a backup contacts search that I can use while question #1 remains unresolved?

Assuming all of your contacts are saved to your Google Contacts in the cloud, try clearing both the app cache and app data for Google Contacts in Settings>Apps, then Force Stop it, and then open it again. Give it a few seconds to resync, and see if the problem persists.

That fixed it instantaneously, thanks!

Hm, the issue returned already. Just a few hours later. Applied the same fix and it's working again. At least there's a quick fix.

I wonder if there's some sort of cumulative thing going on that's causing these. A few months ago I disabled a bunch of background apps/tasks when I was on an overseas trip to minimize roaming costs, and since then this has happened as well as WhatsApp randomly becoming corrupt and wiping all chats. I'm pretty sure I didn't disable any tasks that looked important for proper functioning.

Do you have a lot of contacts that include large amounts of attached info? If so, do those tend to be the contacts that don't show up in the search?

No, when it happens, no contacts show up until I view a contact, after which that contact shows up if I search for them. So far it's only reoccurred once so hopefully that was it.
