Can't get acer aspire on XP to connect to barnacle or wireless tether

I hope this is in the correct place, but I'm I can't for the life of me get my droid to connect to my acer aspire running XP. My wife's toshiba running 7 works fine, my ipod touch connects fine, just this one wont. I know it has to connect through an ad hoc connection (but i'm not familiar with that kind of thing) My droid is rooted 2.1 with modded kernels to let the wireless tether program run correctly. My xp machine recognizes both programs wifi connections, but never connects. Any trouble shooting ideas??? its driving me NUTS!!!
