Cant get past "No Command" prompt when trying to clear cache partition after 5.0 upgrade

I cant get past step 4 using "official" motorola directions to clear the cache partition after upgrading to 5.0.


"1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.

2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS

3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select

Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.

4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)

5. Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key

Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.

6. The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)

7. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option

8. The device will then perform the partition wipe

9. The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence

Start the phone normally. Go to Settings/General/Storage. Wait until Cache finishes calculating and press it. You'll be given the option to clear the cache.

Take a look at this thread. The way to do that changed a little bit after Lollipop.

The instructions are outdated for Lollipop. It's now the opposite. On the Android in distress icon, you'll want to press the Power button a few seconds, then tap on Volume Up. I hope this helps.

That is not the same as wiping the cache partition.

Apparently Motorola changed the instructions in Lollipop, just in case you are running that. As Javier mentioned above, there is a sticky at the top of this forum with corrected instructions for both Lollipop and KitKat. Post one is Lollipop, post two is KitKat.

The only way I've been able to get the KitKat instructions to work consistently is to hold my phone strictly upright so there is no chance it might inadvertently detect a "rotation" into landscape, which includes not leaving it on a flat surface. I don't have Lollipop yet so I can't tell you if that is as fussy.

While this is separate from the Settings/General/Storage cache clear that Rukbat is recommending above, that cache is also a good thing to clear from time to time. That is the application cache, where applications store data for future use. You can go "clean cache" on applications individually as well, but doing it from "Storage" saves a lot of time. I'd recommend, in general, doing that cache cleaning on WiFi if you have a limited data plan, as many applications are going to simply download what you just wiped and put it back in cache again the next time you run them.

I know this is old but I joined just to say thanks. I was stuck on this freaking out for like 30 minutes.

I have been through a number of Android upgrades/updates on several devices. It is common -- perhaps universal -- for something to NOT work as expected -- performance, battery, applications, whatever. Since I caught onto the procedure of clearing the system cache partition it seems to have worked magic every time. Things just work better to a large extent. And, I have never lost anything major -- perhaps a few stored IDs/passwords -- which have forced me to reenter credentials when logging in the next time. There seems to be very little downside.

The forums and blogs are full of horror stories about something or other not working properly with every release.

If this is true then why is clearing system cache such a black magic, secret handshake operation? It seems to be so device and system level dependent and CHANGE all of the time!

• Why isn't "Clear System Cache" available in settings -- with appropriate warnings as necessary?
• Why isn't "Clear System Cache" done -- or at least offered as an option -- with every update?
• Why is it a good thing to have a large segment of the Android community suffer through system anomalies because they can't figure out what to do when there seems to be a reasonable fix? Wouldn't Android just be better for it?

If it is NOT true then what is the downside?
