Can't Get Past The First Step

How embarrassing! I'm trying to root my phone using these instructions (How-To: Root and Install Android 2.2 Froyo On the HTC Droid Incredible). Technically, I did manage to get past the first step but not far. :P I've downloaded the drivers, and my phone was already set to debug mode. I'm stuck on "Connect the phone to your PC and install the first driver. A Found New Hardware Wizard window will pop up here?direct the window to the folder where the USB driver is located and run through the wizard."

No "Found New Hardware" window pops up, and if I try to install it manually through the Device Manager it says "The best driver software for your device is already installed". It says "Android ADB Interface" instead of "Android Bootloader Interface". Just in case I had installed the drivers I turned the phone off, unplugged, and tried to go to HBOOT. Nothing happens when I hold the volume down and the power button except it turning off or on.

I feel so silly for not being able to get past the simple stuff. I've installed drivers before, but I don't have a clue what I'm doing wrong.

I had problems on a windows 7 machine and had to use an older computer for the drivers to work. That is probably the most difficult step

Oh dear, even my crappy eee boots into W7. I wonder if running a live linux os would work. Have to give that a try. :)

I had no trouble at all running Windows 7 and Unrevoked 3 (and forever). FWIW, I followed the instructions to the letter and had no hiccups at all.

Yup same here. You may need to get the drivers from the android sdk installer and do the inf hack to make it detectable for the incredible. Other wise follow the direction and you won't have a problem. I'm on W7 Pro 64bit and it went totally smooth.

Thank you for the help, everyone. :) It's working now. I forgot that I had a netbook dual-booting into Ubuntu so I just used that and it worked like a charm.

It's been a while...

If you unzip the unrEVOked package, you'll see one file with an icon just like whatever browser you're using. It's the instructions for installing the Android drivers, and it includes a link to the files you need.

Did you do this?

In the same boat as the OP. I can't get past the first step and when i go into the drivers it says "Android ADB Interface". I also run windows 7 and it says its up to date.

@op how did you get past this, i have no other OS then win7

I ended up installing it on Linux, so I'm afraid I'm no help. :(

Yep. I downloaded the files and then tried to follow the directions to the letter, with no luck.
