Can't get windows 10 to connect to my S7

No matter what I try I can't get windows 10 to let me browse my S7.

1. The USB connection is set to MTP on the phone (I have also tried all the others).
2. I have installed Samsungs usb phone drivers. Several different versions. I have uninstalled and reinstalled them many times, and rebooted in between (also tried without rebooting)
3. I tried installing kies3, but it demands that I install Windows Media Feature Pack - which I already have. Windows won't let me install the media feature pack again, since it's already installed - and Kies won't install since it thinks I don't have the media pack.

When I connect my phone the first time after reinstalling the samsung driver the Device setup starts. It gets stuck and never finishes. If I disconnect the phone the device setup goes away and never appears again.

Windows makes the sound that it it connected but I can't find the phone.

I'm using USBDeview to review the USB connections and it does find the phone (says SAMSUNG_Android), but the device type is set to Unknown.

How on earth do I solve this? I really need to be able to move files between my computer and the phone (Airdroid etc is not an option in this case).

Is there some kind of Samsung driver cleaner?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using the official Samsung cable? Can you try a different one? Also, make sure you're using one of the native USB ports on the computer, and not a hub.

With your phone plugged in, open device manager and see if there is a yellow triangle on any USB device.

If so right click > Update Driver and let Windows automatically look for a new driver. MTP can get flakey and not install like it should when the first device that needs it is plugged in.

Thank you. I'm using the original cable (have tried several) and I'm connected directly to the computer (have tried all usb ports). And no problem in the device manager:

I tried updating the driver, but it says "The best driver software for your device is already installed".
Also uninstalled the device from device manager - and reinstalled. No change...

Windows sees the unit, and seems to identify it correctly. It makes the little USB sound when I connect it, and whenever I change the usb setting to MTP on the phone. After a while a popup on the phone says that the connected unit can't open data on the phone.

Tried with it on and off, no difference. I tried installing Smart Watch, but it demands that I install or Reinstall Windows Media Feature Pack. But it 's already installed and Windows doesn't allow me to reinstall it (or even uninstall it). So I can't get Kies or Smart Watch running either.

Grrrr... I'm so fed up with Samsungs special solutions for everything. I remember when you could connect your phone and it would just act like and Mass Storage unit - no problems there. Now it's always a freaking engineering feat to transfer a simple mp3. If I wanted that I would have gone iPhone :-)

I finally found the KB3099229 update that correctly installs Media Feature Pack. Really strange problem... Now it seems to work (knock on wood).
Thank you so much for taking the time to help. Cheers!

It actually did work pretty well.

First, glad that you figured things out! Was Windows bugging you to update in the first place? As much as I loathe Windows Updates (and the occasional update that borks things), I usually check automatically and manually on a regular basis, to make sure everything is as up to date as possible.

Second--you're saying Kies actually worked with the S7? I thought Kies usually tells you to use Smart Switch for more recent devices.

It might do. Didn't test it to much to be honest. I only use windows explorer since I want to browse it lik a drive.

Windows didn't bug me actually. It was up to date. I had to manually install that update, since win thought the media package was already installed. Weird...

Yup. I have Kies3 for my Note 2 and running it with my Edge and it just tells me it's not compatible.

SmartSwitch doesn't work as it does not enable the USB port to see the devuce. Help!
Smart Switch should include the necessary drivers needed for the computer to see the device. If it doesn't work, I'd be looking at a faulty connection somewhere.
