i can download apk files on s7 edge but once it finishes downloading i press it and it goes away yet nothing happens. i go to my files and press it and nothing happens yet again. i have enabled installation of unknown sources. I've tried clearing download cache and cache partition in recovery mode. nothing seems to be working. I'm on android marshmallow 6.0.1. is marshmallow compatible with apk?

Most likely the compilation you downloaded isn't compatible with your phone/Android version, so it runs the installer which sees the problem and closes. (That's another reason to download apps from Google - you automatically get the correct version and, if you don't see the app on your phone, it means that there is no correct version.)

I have the same problem.
Can download from outside sources but when I try to open them there is no response.
Permission is enabled.
On my Galaxy 4 I did not have this problem

If the apk is compiled for your phone and your version of Android, it should work. But if you're downloading individual apk files from some site, there's only a single version there, and if it's not the version that will work on your phone, it won't. Maybe they used to have S7 Marshmallow apk files but don't any more, or maybe they're S7 Lollipop files and you just updated to Marshmallow, and the apk files they have won't run on Marshmallow. Or any of a few other problems.

If you get the apps from Google Play, you get the version for your phone and your version of Android - or you don't even see a listing for the app. As I said - that's why you should get all your apps from Play.

(Android - all versions - is "compatible with apk" - that's the filetype of the Android app installation package file.)
