Can't open doc, pdf, or xls files

Tried searching with no luck. I can't open any file with that extension. My phone thinks they are images. All options, when I click a file, bring up image apps. I've cleared all defaults I can find. even in file manager, all my doc, pdf, and xls files have the gallery icon next to them. I can open a office type app, and then open the file fine. But, i can't get an app assigned to them. got to be something simple I'm missing? thx.

Where are you getting the files from? Have you tried uploading them to Drive?

thx, its those types of files from anywhere. emailed to me, or ones i just put on the phone myself. Haven't tried Drive yet. Its like I did something long ago to make the phone think those extensions are images.

Make sure "Drive" is enabled in your apps

Which Office app(s) ?
Maybe they are interfering with who gets to open what by default.
I'd start with one. You may want to, or need, a separate app for PDF.

thanks for help. i did what i had done before, went to apps in settings and just cleared out everything. did a couple reboots and all seems fine. thanks for the replies.
