Cant open previously downloaded files

In the recent files>downloads folder, I previously had files that I could open and view, but all of a sudden, I can't. They are multiple file types, PDF, jpg, etc. I get this message: file was deleted, moved, or renamed. Tap download to download the file again, or tap remove to remove it from downloads. Why had this happened suddenly?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Were you using a separate file manager app to access the /Download directory? It's possible to delete an actual file in the /Download directory, but still see it listed in the Downloads app (since the Downloads app isn't a true file manager).
