Can't play NAS stored MP4s in browsers without H.264 codec.

I have MP4 videos on my Seagate NAS drive. I can play them using the Seagate app on my phone when I am connected to my home network. I am trying to play them using a browser when I am not home. When I click on the videos I get a popup "Your video file must use the H.264 codec in order to play in the browser."

I've tried the stock browser, Chrome, and Firefox (says it supports H.264).

This happens on my S4 and android tablet. It also happened on my laptop (Win 7) but after a few minutes it started playing.

Do I need to add the codec to the browser and if so how do I do that?

Install MX Player. Use it to play the video when you're not home. If it doesn't have the codec, it'll direct you to the page to download it (it's free). There's also a paid ($6) version of MX if you don't like the ads.
