Can't pull update without active sim?

I have an HTC One M8 on AT&T. I don't have active service with them nor do I want to purchase service with them. But I cannot pull the Lollipop update or any update for that matter without an active sim supposedly. I've tried on WiFi and it says Network Not Setup, please Setup Network. Why do they have to make their update process so complicated? All I want is the update without having to buy service for a sim card. But if I bought a sim card from online would it have to be active on an account for my phone to pull the update. I'm completely confused, so any help would be appreciated. And I've tired to borrow a friends sim but they don't have a nano, and everyone else either uses Verizon or Sprint.

Carrier devices have to receive their system updates from their native carrier. So for example, if you took your AT&T M8 over to T-Mobile and started using it there, you'd still have to go back to AT&T in order to get the proper update--an AT&T phone can't update using the T-Mobile firmware.

You could try using HTC Sync Manager, but I'm not sure if this is only possible on certain phones or certain networks: HTC One max (Verizon) - Checking for software updates for your phones in H - SETTINGS & SERVICES - How-tos - Support | HTC United States. I could only find this support page for Verizon HTC phones--when I selected AT&T M8 instead, I couldn't find it.

If all else fails, you could get the cheapest prepaid AT&T (GoPhone) plan for one month, insert the SIM, register on the network, then turn on wi-fi and check for system updates.

My service is currently through Straight Talk. I've checked for the update 2 times and I always get the same message. Any idea why? I called AT&T and they said it would still pull the update through Straight Talk.

Interesting--I'm not sure if that's correct. Maybe others could weigh in about success or failure when trying to update on a different network.

Have you tried the HTC Sync Manager option?

I don't have a laptop or computer to try it on. But I wasn't on WiFi when checking, I was on LTE. I'll try later today on WiFi and report back. And I've heard the stories about the update but I think I'll be fine. I'm on 4.2.2 right now.

Yeah, Lollipop has not been particularly impressive on my wife's Verizon M8.

Well I've had 2 updates so far and I stopped. I'm on kit Kat 4.4.4 I'll think I'll stay on it until 5.1 is realeased or whatever the next update will be.
