Can't reboot my Pixel 6 Pro

This is weird.

I realized that I wasn't getting notification sounds on incoming Teams and emails. Confirmed that Do Not Disturb is not enabled and that sound levels are all set to their normal range.

So, I thought I'd go ahead and reboot. But, holding the power button for more than a second or two just opens the Assistant ("Hi., how can I help?") and continuing to hold the power button for extended periods (30 seconds or more) still does not pop up the power menu.

Actually, further research shows that I now have to press Power and Volume Up at the same time to access the power/emergency menu. When did that change slip through?

It's a change that's been coming for a while, having a dedicated power button in 2022 is a bit of a waste really.

You can change it in the gestures section of system settings though if you want to.

It came in with Android 12. If you turn hold for assistant off in gestures the power button will go back to normal. Or you can reboot in the quick setting menu there is a little power button there.

I've been using Android 12 for many months (beta on my Pixel 4XL and now on Pixel 6 Pro), and this is the first time I noticed it.

I find it to be a good idea -- helps prevent accidental reboots if the phone is in your pocket or in a bag, where the Power button might accidentally get pressed for more than a quick tap, and then a random touch might cause a shutdown or restart.

I simply swipe down with two fingers and the power button appears in the middle.

Having to hold the power button on my 4XL, with A12 for well over 8-12 seconds (just checked 11 seconds) to get a reboot. Just checked, it still works. As for accidental reboot. NEVER for any of my phones, that had the same hold button for reboot feature (previous Moto/LG for two). And I normally carry the phone in my right rear pants pocket, unless in winter, outside in top left pocket of coat.

Yeah, the very-long press of the Power button should always work to force a shutdown on most Android devices (with Samsung being the exception, requiring a very-long press of Power and Vol Down).

Yes, that power/volumn down on the Samsung is strange. I had a S21U for two days and that reboot process took me by surprise.

Usually Samsung especially the newer ones the volume buttons together and power button takes to download mode to flash firmwares, older ones volume down and power is also download mode , volume up /power is recovery mode .

Right, but that's when you use those combinations to power the phone on. To force a shutdown (like if the phone is frozen), it's still Power and Vol Down, right? Can you just press and hold Power to force a shutdown on a Samsung phone if the it's frozen?

You should be able to with holding power button

Samsung tech had me do the Hard Reset with Vol down/power button numerous times after they fiddled with the phone remotely; that did a Hard Reset, call it whatever, but basically the same as can be done on my 4XL and on previous Motos with just holding in the power button. When doing the Hard Reset the option to restart, turn off, etc. will be displayed. Just keep holding the two buttons in for about 10 seconds and it will do the Hard Restart. Again, just like my 4XL.

Not like it is something that is needed to be done on a common basis, just a standard restart usually works. (I remember in the old day, some would suggest a hard restart everyday.

Single button is better and for someone without two hands or fingers on both hands; no easy to do with one hand.
