Can't transfer files to or from device, how can I fix?

I am UNABLE to transfer files to or from my phone nor can I delete files while it is plugged into the computer!!! I get an error message EVERY TIME "This device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected"!!! I am ripping my hairs out on this one and Verizon Wireless has >1hour hold times atm

I'd recommend their online chat - it's pretty close to instant. This sounds like a toggle (usb debugging and/or mtp mode) or driver issue. Does it have an SD card in it?
