Can't unlock my Samsung Galaxy S5

My phone asked to download the updates. I clicked allow, and now 60 minutes later I can't unlock my phone and I still have the notification icon indicating download. Why does it take so long, and is this why I can't unlock my phone?

Are you talking about the play store? What wanted to update?

You could try a battery pull to reboot the phone.

The update is for kitkat. If your WiFi was interrupted during the update, this will cause any of your described issues. Make sure WiFi is operational, and proceed. You may have to do a reboot, or battery drop if this was the case.
