can't update my Samsung galaxy lite SGH 1717 note

I have been using the Samsung galaxy note lite 1717 note 4.0.4 for the past 3yrs now but the phone have not ask for update why.2 the problem I'm having with the phone now it it freezes much sometimes it shows Facebook is not responding etc.please what can i do

You usually get updates for about 2 years, then no more. That phone is 4 years old, so you won't be seeing any more updates for it. (It costs the manufacturer and the carrier a lot of money to customize an update to a particular model phone, so they stop after a couple of years, since most people get new phones every 2 years anyway. For those of us who don't [and I'm one] - I guess they just don't care.)
