Can't use hboot menu. Vol key doesn't work.

Background: I bought a waterdamaged, I know, phone on ebay. The screen was alleged to not work. It does. But the pattern lock, which the seller forgot, is activated.
I tried to wipe the phone using the hboot menu. I know the down vol key works, as it's what got me into the menu in the first place, but it doesn't function inside the menu. I finally got the usb cable in the mail today, hoping to push a new rom onto the phone. The phone is in "charge only" mode, which I can't change as the pattern lock is activated.
So I tried putting a rom, PC36IMG.zip, on two different sd cards, one I know works in my other phone. I got an error message, No image, or something similar.
I could use any advice you geniuses may have.

can you get into the bootloader? and vol button doesnt work at all? let me think on this for a few.i'll be in and out all night

oh ok i reread ,if the vol down works go to factory reset and that will clear the patteren

Highlight the hboot hit power then scroll down to clear storage that should do it

Hi, thanks for the response. I know it's a strange situation. The vol key works to launch hboot, but it doens't work inside to wipe. I don't know what's causing this.

if it worked once it should again i would just kepp messing with it in bootloader

I don't think I'm being stupid, I have rooted two other models of htc androids, but it's not working. Nothing works except it will scan the sd card, which gives me an error message.

it just seems odd if you can use the vol down to enter the bootloader but it doesnt work once your in it

I can't find a bootloader unlocker that works. I assume the usb debugging option is what's causing the issue and I can't switch it.

when in the fastboot usb mode in the bootloader the debugging is not in effect

Those programs don't work. They all get stuck "waiting for device". HTC sync isn't installed and I've tried to run as administrator and in ubuntu.
I give up! I've been at this for over two weeks and nothing works. I'm not totally clueless when it comes to roms and rooting, but I'm really frustrated.
Who knew wiping a phone could be so difficult. Is it possible the water damage is causing the issue with the hboot menu? It seems unlikely to me, as the buttons work for getting into the menu.
In any case, thank you for all of your advice! I just don't know what else to try.

yea, hard telling with the water damage, did you know it had water damage before you bought it?
the OG is a nice phone i almost like it better then the 3d

first, is your bootloader unlocked? if not start here
